Remembering those who served our country ...

We have made special crosses to remember those from Apiti who served in World War One. Many did not come home. We also remember our relatives who fought in WW1. We have made special crosses to respect them.

We used our maths understanding to make sure that the dimensions of the crosses were the same.
We measured it to make sure that our letters were even and used pencil to make sure our letters and spelling were accurate.
We took pride in our presentation to respect those we were making crosses for.

Finally we wrote their names in vivid and placed them on our school field.
We measured out a grid for the crosses. We used metre rulers to make sure that the grid was accurate.

We have been learning about our flag and what it represents for the people of Aotearoa.

Songs for ANZAC Day

As part of our ANZAC Celebrations we have been practising the songs we will perform.
The Ukulele Orchestra will play 'In Flander's Field's to the tune of 'Amazing Grace'. Hannah will sing.
We will all sing 'Daisy Daisy', 'Pack up your troubles' and 'Maori Battalion'
Hannah's band will perform 'It's a long way to Tipperary'

ANZAC Biscuits

We were very lucky to have June, from Apiti, come and share with us about the history of the ANZAC Biscuit.
We learnt that ... her aunty made ANZAC Biscuits for the soldiers. .. in the hundreds!!!. They were actually very tiny ginger nuts. She made them like this so that everyone could enjoy them and they would last well in the trenches.

We even watched an article about it on one news ...http://tvnz.co.nz/seven-sharp/current-anzac-biscuit-imposter-video-6297378

We have all been making ANZAC bicuits to be shared at the ANZAC Day ceremony in Apiti.

A visitor ...

Today Colonel Sergeant Barlow came to visit us. He will be leading the parade at the ANZAC Ceremony in Apiti on Saturday the 25th of April.
We learnt a lot from him ...

  • What the letters ... ANZAC mean
  • Where Gallipoli is
  • Why we have a dawn parade on ANZAC Day
  • What guns they use in the army
  • How to do an army press-up
He also told us a little bit about his life and his job in the army.

Remembering ...

We looked at what we already know about ANZAC Day in Apiti.
Here is a video we made in 2013 ...
